And…Done!

Mark’s best friend Jed and his wife Vanessa are expecting their second baby this summer. They already have a beautiful girl and come August(ish) they’re adding a boy to the family. I made a blanket for Avery when Vanessa was still pregnant with her so I decided to make another blanket.

I settled on a modified fan and feather pattern, picked up some yarn in late May and got started. Last night I finally finished the darn thing. Man, this thing took forever to finish. In all fairness, I did finish two other projects at the same time that I was working on the blanket, but still…I’d forgotten how long it takes to make a baby blanket (along with how tedious it can also get). So here it is, after one month and one week of intermittent knitting, 10 balls of merino wool totaling 1181 yards of yarn (that’s 2/3 of a mile!), a blanket for baby Aidan:

  1. That is such a gorgeous blanket. You did a really wonderful job! I’m so envious that you have ninja knitting skills… my ninja skill are restricted to rather biting potty humor.

You know what would be REALLY fun? Making a king sized throw in that pattern and mailing it to me!

  2. What a wonderful gift for your friend and her children. I am sure it will be treasured for many years.

  3. hey, math geek! how long did it take you to figure out the 2/3 mile thingy!!!

i love the blanket. it’s gorgeous. seriously. in fact i’m considering sending lily’s “pink blankie” to you – she’s loved it to death and it’s starting to unravel, and of course i have no idea how to fix it :-( .

  4. Beautiful! I so envy your knitting skills. I tried to teach myself while I was pregnant and gave up after about 10 minutes.

You have some serious skill! I’m sure your friends will love it!

  5. I have said it a thousand times, you have mad knitting skills girl! The blanket is beautiful! I am certain that your friends will love it! Now, if you have any pull with these people, could you please have them choose another name for their child?! LOL!

  6. It’s beautiful! You are very skilled, and how sweet is it that you made your friend’s babies blankets? I didn’t even do that for my own kids, LOL!

  7. I made a craptaculous crocheted blanket for Ellie while I was pregnant; I’m seriously embarassed by it now looking at what you accomplished in a few weeks. Mine took like 4 months, and it’s cheesy.

You rock knitting needles like nobody’s business.

  8. It’s beautiful – and I am jealous too. I can knit, but that would take me a year easy. I have like four projects I have yet to finish. My excuse is you can’t knit when it’s warm!

  9. Lucky Aiden, that looks really soft.

  10. That is so pretty Cathy! I admire your determination!

I’ve decided to tackle a sweater for Rich (hopefully the pattern will arrive this week) — I don’t know if I could do a baby blanket!

    It’s beautiful!

  11. Cathy, that is just GORGEOUS. You can’t buy something like that. Your friend will just love it. Someone made a blanket like this for Abby and she STILL sleeps with it and uses it as her comfort blankie. I’m sure your friend’s baby will adore this blanket just as much! Seriously, great job.

  12. That is awesome Cathy…and what a special and meaningful gift for them!
